Today’s fitness blog by falda_eats explains that you do not need an expensive gym membership to have a good workout.
Urban running is a fantastic way to explore new streets, steps and wynds (Scottish for a narrow street or alley). Even if like me you are fairly familiar with your town or city there is always more to discover and on my daily runs I love to workout mid-run using what’s around me; benches, steps, walls and street art.
Here’s my top tips for using your surroundings to workout:
Get out of the gym:
Instead of spending hours in the gym during the warmer months why not head out for a short run and some HIIT training in the park – I love taking my resistance band out with me so I can do some awesome workouts in my local park halfway through my run!
Slackline
Last year my older brother introduced me to slacklining – it’s fantastic for core training and balance – it’s also great fun and you can put up your line between two trees in a green space.
Take a friend
I LOVE social running – heading out for a short run with a friend (or group of friends) in the evenings can be so much fun, especially if you finish with a beer afterwards!
Take it in
I love beating my personal bests, but I also know that not every run is a race – why not try running to a viewpoint or monument and really stop to take it in for a few minutes.
Try something new somewhere new
If you’ve seen my instagram you will know I love trying new sports – this year I have started to play tennis and squash in our gym courts – but on sunnier evenings I try to get out to nearby parks with free facilities – enjoying the sunshine while learning a new sport – if im feeling super fit I run or cycle to the courts first.
